A top-shelf finish for a top-shelf product

After printing your labels, we can apply another layer of film over the top of it. We call this ‘film lamination’.

For example, we can print your label on a white polypropylene film and then apply a film lamination over the top to create the final finish.

Note: We can’t apply the film lamination to a selected area. It must be applied to the entire label.

The advantages of film lamination

Film lamination can enhance the look, feel and durability of your labels. Like our UV-protective varnish, it’s available in both matt and gloss.

However, it creates a strong effect that varnish can’t replicate. Your labels will be thicker, which gives them a more premium feel. And while they’re not classed as a ‘protective’ finish they will protect your labels from water, oil, light chemicals and abrasion.

Should I choose matt or gloss?

If you’re producing a premium label, you may want to go with gloss film lamination. It creates that super glossy look you often see on sports nutrition labels. It’s also good for paint and chemical product labels due to its protective properties.

Offering just as much protection as its glossy counterpart, matt film lamination gives your labels a soft, silky finish. You may see these labels on everything from beer through to cosmetic products.

Important notes

If you’re applying additional to your labels using thermal transfer printing, do not apply any film lamination. We’ve found that some thermal transfer machines and processes smudge the ink.

Some label manufacturers refer to polypropylene material as a ‘laminate’, not the film lamination process that we are detailing here.

Descriptions of label finishes can be quite subjective. We suggest you order a free sample pack so you see our materials, processes and print quality for yourself.
