GHS labels for dangerous substances labeling

GHS labels are based on the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS). This globally uniform system is used to classify chemicals and provides guidelines for their labeling on containers. Hazard labels are recognized by the red and white hazard pictograms that are applied to the packaging and indicate the hazard posed by the substance.

On the one hand, a distinction is made according to the type of hazard, i.e. whether explosive substances, gases and gaseous substances or flammable liquids are involved. Examples of these hazard pictograms are Flammable (left) or Explosive (right):

Dangerous substances labels: What must be on them?

In order for consumers and users to know at a glance what hazard the substance or object represents, labels of hazardous substances must contain certain mandatory information:

• Name of the substance
• Warning word
• Indication of danger
• Precautionary statements and pictograms
• Name, address and telephone number of supplier
• Nominal quantity
• Additional information, if applicable
• A minimum label size is also specified depending on the container capacity.

Warning labels and danger symbols for all industries

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, safety signs (round, blue and white) such as “wash your hands”, “disinfect your hands” or “keep your distance” have become increasingly important, indicating that certain rules must be followed to ensure everyone’s safety.

Round, red and white prohibition signs can also be used and contribute to safety in the workplace or in public buildings. One such prohibition sign is the pictogram “No smoking”. These prohibition signs are intended to prevent potentially dangerous behavior.

Another way of signaling hazards are the so-called warning signs. These yellow-black triangular signs indicate danger points that represent a potential hazard, such as “Warning of electrical voltage”.
